Recycling Industry a Leader in Establishing Standard for Rubber Used as Playground Safety Surface

(Washington, DC) – The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) announced today it was proud to play a significant role in the establishment of standard specifications for loose-fill rubber used in playground surfacing. ISRI members actively participated as part of a taskforce within ASTM’s F08.63 committee on Playground Surfacing Systems to create the Standard Specification for Loose-Fill Rubber for Use as a Playground Safety Surface under and around Playground Equipment (standard designation ASTM F3012).

“The work of ISRI members and the taskforce in creating this standard specification will lead to safer, more uniform loose-fill rubber playground surfacing products,” said Robin Wiener, president of ISRI. “By selecting a surface material that meets the standard, playground operators will have the confidence of knowing exactly what the material is children will be playing on, and that it is safe.”

As part of the drafting process, the taskforce considered points of view from many stakeholders, including the recycling industry, playground equipment manufacturers, playground operators, concerned parents, government and many others. This collaborative process has allowed for a standard that brings together the experience, expertise and interests of the stakeholders involved.

ASTM F3012 was developed by ASTM’s F08.63 on Playground Surfacing Systems, part of ASTM Committee F08 on Sports Equipment, Playing Surfaces, and Facilities. ASTM International is one of the world’s largest development and delivery systems of voluntary consensus standards and related products and services. In addition to 12,000 technical standards covering diverse industry sectors, ASTM provides technical training, certification and proficiency testing programs, and environmental product declarations.

A summary of F3012 is available on the ASTM website, where a full version can also be purchased.
