This 1.5-hour webinar will highlight the ISRI/OSHA alliance and OSHA’s on-site consultation program. It will cover the benefits of working with OSHA to improve your health & safety programming. The session will include commentary from ISRI member(s) on their experiences in working with OSHA’s on-site consultation program. And it will also see some members speaking on the benefits of achieving OSHA’s Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) status.

SPEAKERS
John Olaechea is the Compliance Assistance Specialist for OSHA in Region VIII. He provides outreach and information about safety and health hazards and OSHA policies and regulations to employers, trade associations, unions, other organizations, and the public.
Prior to this position, John worked for eight years as an industrial hygienist and compliance officer for the Englewood Area Office of OSHA and has 20 years of experience in the EHS field. John also served in the United States Peace Corps (Guatemala) for two years and graduated from Wright State University (Ohio) with a degree in environmental health science.
JAs a Senior Safety and Health Consultant for 10 years, James is invited by employers to identify safety and health hazards in construction and general industry and provide confidential, comprehensive written reports detailing recommendations. He regularly completes over 100 safety and health surveys in a calendar year. James also conducts 10- and 30-hour construction and general industry courses and assists with the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).
Previously James served as a UOSH Senior Safety/Health Compliance Officer for nine years, conducting safety and health inspections, including serious accident and fatality investigations. During this time, he served as team lead for Process Safety Management (PSM) inspections at Utah refineries, oversaw Whistleblower complaints, and assisted with the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). Prior to that, James worked for nine years as the Utah Labor Commission Reemployment Coordinator, assisting injured workers back to work.
James has a master’s degree in Administration from Brigham Young University and a bachelor’s degree in Forensics and Psychology from Indiana University.
Background information on OSHA Alliance
In October of 2015 the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced the formation of an Alliance to promote health and safety in workplaces throughout the recycling industry. Through the Alliance, ISRI will team with OSHA to provide ISRI’s members and others with information, guidance, training, and other resources to protect the health and safety of workers within the recycling industry.
One of the goals of the Alliance is to promote a culture of safety within the recycling industry that works toward the reduction of workplace-incidents and prevention of worker exposure to hazards. This includes those associated with powered industrial trucks and other machinery, insufficient hazard communication, lead, improper electrical wiring methods, control of hazardous energy, and others. Injury, illness, and hazard exposure data will be used to prioritize areas of emphasis for Alliance activities.
As part of the Alliance, ISRI and OSHA will collaborate on events such as ISRI Safety and Environmental Council (ISEC) meetings, ISRI’s Safety Stand-Down Day, and ISRI’s annual convention to provide compliance assistance for attendees, and promote and distribute OSHA, ISRI, and other available safety resources. Both sides will also include information within current publications regarding cooperative programs in which ISRI members could benefit.
