Mobile equipment safety, electric vehicle awareness and hazard recognition were just some of the topics covered at the Mid-Atlantic Chapter’s safety day. Hosted it in Columbia, Pennsylvania, approximately 50 people attended a seminar taught by Tony Smith, ISRI’s vice president of safety, and Jerry Sjogren, ISRI’s senior director of safety.

This was the second safety day the Mid-Atlantic Chapter held. The ReMA Safety team has been busy in the area hosting multiple trainings and facility visits.

Safety day began with attendees participating in a four-hour training. The full range of topics covered included:

  • Mobile equipment safety.
  • Blind spot awareness.
  • Fire safety and prevention.
  • Electric vehicle awareness.
  • OSHA update.
  • Near-miss reporting.
  • Hazard recognition.

Lunch was provided and there was an optional visit scheduled for a walkthrough of the Sahd Metal Recycling facility. “Almost everyone from the morning meeting attended and participated. It was great to see,” said Smith. “It was great to see the openness around health and safety from the facility owners at Sahd. It was also great to see and hear the questions and conversations throughout the day.”

Smith recommends bringing ReMA Safety into your facility for a seminar or a walkthrough as it’s an opportunity to create more awareness around your health and safety programs. “Don’t worry about having everything perfect,” said Smith. “Some of the information shared will be a good refresher, and other information will be new and beneficial to your operation.
