ISRI leaders recently traveled to India to represent the U.S. recycled materials industry at the International Material Recycling Conference (IMRC) in Kolkata, hosted by the Materials Recycling Association of India (MRAI), as well as a week of pre-event meetings with the government of India in New Delhi. MRAI is ISRI’s counterpart in India and a strong partner in ReMA efforts on the international front.

ISRI leaders began their initial meetings in New Delhi, where ReMA Chair Brian Henesey, ReMA Chair-Elect Colin Kelly, ReMA President Robin Wiener and ReMA AVP for International Trade and Global Affairs Adam Shaffer, met with various ministries of the government of India, including the Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Heavy Industry, Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change, as well as the Bureau of India Standards. The meetings served to promote the industry’s critical role in the transition to a net-zero carbon future, the importance of market access, ISRI’s Specifications and more. Additionally, ReMA leaders met with the U.S. Commercial Service, through the U.S. Department of Commerce, to discuss how the group can further support ReMA and efforts of the recycled materials industry.

Following the successful government meetings in New Delhi, ReMA leaders traveled to Kolkata to attend MRAI where ReMA Chair Brian Henesey participated in a panel presentation focused on market trends, industry drivers and an outlook from the U.S. perspective. ReMA leaders also used the panel as an opportunity to pitch ISRI’s annual convention and the strength of ISRI. Following the presentation, many attendees reached out with inquiries about both ReMA membership and attending ISRI2024. Officials from the government of India also expressed interest in attending ISRI2024.
