“I can’t remember a year we didn’t have great weather for the event,” says Eds Harding, Vice President of ISRI’s New England Chapter recalling the chapter’s annual Golf Outing on Aug. 29 at Framingham Country Club in Framingham, Mass.
The day included a traditional lunch before 18 holes of golf, followed by a cocktail hour and dinner. The golf outing also features 50/50 raffle in which the proceeds go to a charity selected by the chapter board.
The golf outing is the New England Chapter’s signature event and one that attendees look forward to every year. This year was no exception not only because of the socializing and networking opportunities but also because the donations for the 2022 fundraiser went to the American Brain Tumor Association—a nonprofit close to attendees’ hearts.
“In the summer of 2021 we lost Mark Gitlin to brain cancer,” Harding says. Gitlin, who worked at ISRI member Mid-City Scrap in Westport, Mass., for 50 years, was a beloved industry peer and New England Chapter board member. As the 2021 golf outing neared, the chapter knew they wanted the proceeds from the 50/50 raffle to go to an organization dedicated to brain tumor education, support, and research.
In the past the chapter has donated proceeds to several different charities including food banks in Boston and the Wounded Warriors Project, which offers programs, services, and events for wounded veterans of military actions following 9/11.
Typically, New England Chapter board members would volunteer a charity or organization they wanted to give back to and then the board at large would discuss all the options. But after losing a board member to brain cancer everyone agreed the American Brain Tumor Association would be this year’s charity.
“Because of Mark we’re more passionate to keep donating to this association,” Harding says. “We feel good about doing this fundraiser and giving to the American Brain Tumor Association. We picked it this year and we anticipate we’ll be donating the association at next year’s golf event as well.”
The chapter’s winter event will be a Boston Celtics game Jan. 9, 2023, at TD Garden. The chapter has secured three suites on the rafter’s level that can be combined into a shared space. Enjoy an evening full of networking opportunities, catching up with friends, and watching a great basketball game against the Chicago Bulls. The event is limited to 115 tickets so make sure to register early before the event sells out.
