ISRI’s Safety and Environmental Conference (ISEC) is coming back for fall 2022 with updated information related to environmental, health, and safety (EHS) issues facing recyclers.
The 2022 fall ISEC will be held consecutive Thursdays: Nov. 3, 10, and 17. Some of the topics will be familiar to recyclers who attended the 2022 spring ISEC in St. Louis. Fall sessions will be held via Zoom.
The ISEC Committee reviewed industry experience, recent or upcoming changes to programs and regulations that affect ISRI membership, and direct feedback received during the spring ISEC to choose the fall meeting topics, explains Rose Sinclair, EHS manager at Casella Springfield Recycling in Springfield, Mass., and chair of the committee. The review included conducting polls about suggested topics’ relevance and finding the best possible experts to explain the subjects.
“What I appreciate about remote ISRI meetings are the efforts to make the presentations engaging and lively. We aren’t just sitting and listening but actively engaging, asking questions, exploring answers, and creating that space to share in confidence with industry peers,” Sinclair says. “This will be my third remote ISEC and I look forward to the story sharing and frank discussions that contribute to safer, more efficient, and compliant operations for our members.”
The schedule for the fall ISEC is (all times EDT):
Thursday, Nov. 3, 2-4 p.m.
“Lithium-Ion Batteries: Safe Handling, Storage, Recycling, and Transporting,” presented by Bill Keegan, president of Dem-Con Companies; Michael Hughes, vice president of safety, Casella Waste Systems Inc.; Richard “Bo” Bodo, director of learning and development, Li-Cycle; and Eric Frederickson, managing director of operations, Call2Recycle.
Thursday, Nov. 10, 2-3 p.m.

“We encourage people at in-person and virtual ISECs to come prepared to share their experiences,” says Tony Smith, ISRI’s vice president of safety. “ISEC is a place where, at the end of the day, we want everyone to leave better equipped to build and maintain the safety culture at their facilities.”
