Congratulations to ISRI SE Member Allied Scrap Processors, Inc. (Lakeland, FL) for their third Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) certification from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)!
SHARP recognizes small business employers (250 or fewer employees) who have used OSHA’s On-Site Consultation Program services and operate exemplary safety and health programs. Acceptance of a worksite into SHARP from OSHA singles out the employer among their business peers as a model for worksite safety and health.
Rose Mock, President of Allied Scrap Processors, Inc., heard about SHARP at an ISRI SE Region Meeting in Nashville years ago. “We had a presentation from the Regional OSHA Director, and he told us about the University Programs in each state that help companies with their safety,” she recalls. “I researched opportunities in Florida, and we have USF Safety and Health that does that program in Florida. We applied for their inspection that they provide FREE of charge in hopes that companies are safe workplaces.
“If they find any violations, you have a grace period to correct them. If you don’t correct them, then they will turn you into OSHA,” she advises.
Working with OSHA to achieve the SHARP status has been straightforward, Mock says. “We have them come every two years and our Safety and Health Consultant has been instrumental in helping us get our SHARP Certifications. They do the paperwork and go to bat for us with OSHA. OSHA is very stringent on the qualifications which makes it even more of an achievement.”
Though the process takes time and effort, she says it has been worth it, especially when it comes to training and retaining quality employees. “Enrolling in USF Safety was the smartest move we made for our safety program and has paid off exponentially for us,” she says. “Quality employees want to work in a safe environment. From their first day, every employee is taught their first responsibility is to ensure they know how to perform all new tasks safely.”
