International Recycling Organization Details Priorities with Focus on Shipping Reform and Workplace Development

(Washington, DC) – The Board of Directors of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) has approved the association’s 2022 ISRI Advocacy Agenda, which outlines the direction of advocacy activity at the state/local, federal, and international level. As a framework for continued policy arena success, it reflects broad actions of:

  • Recyclable commodities are sustainable materials and recycling is essential to the U.S. and global manufacturing supply chain.
  • Recycling is sustainable manufacturing.
  • ISRI is recycling—advocating for “responsible recycling that follows recommended industry practices, standards and compliance; engages an inclusive workforce; and emphasizes strong community relationships.”

“The advocacy agenda continues to be an ambitious yet critical platform to guide our work on behalf of our members and the broader recycling industry,” said Adina Renee Adler, ISRI Vice President of Advocacy.

ISRI prioritizes educating federal, state, and local governments, and the public on recycling’s important role in the supply chain for infrastructure improvement. Advocacy efforts continue in several areas including manufacturing sales tax exemptions for recyclers, enforcement of existing trade laws; restoration of recycling industry oversight by the Surface Transportation Board (STB); effective legislation and greater law enforcement collaboration to stop materials theft; and the recyclability and use of recycled content in manufactured products.

ISRI Chief Lobbyist Billy Johnson added, “The advocacy agenda provides ISRI with the strategic goals and directions to deliver for the membership.”

The ISRI advocacy agenda is a living framework. Full, updated information can be found here.
