(Washington, DC) – The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) today released the following statement on the reintroduction of the bipartisan Realizing the Economic Opportunities and Values of Expanding Recycling (RECOVER) Act:
While everyone recognizes recycling is a key climate solution and the vital first link in the manufacturing supply chain, the RECOVER bill doesn’t adequately focus on the key impediments to residential recycling - that is eliminating contamination.
Without education, valuable residential recyclables are either contaminated and can no longer be reused or are discarded. Instead, legislation such as the RECYCLE Act that focus on solving the public education deficit will result in cleaner recycling streams from the start.
The bill is sponsored by Representatives Tony Cárdenas (D-CA) and Larry Bucshon (R-IN).
ISRI previously expressed its support for the reintroduced RECYCLE Act (S. 2941), which provides public awareness, education, and much needed clarity for residential recycling programs in the United States.
