ISRI Statement on Averted Railroad Strike

ISRI Urged Congress to Take Action to Avoid Disastrous Supply Chain and Economic Consequences

(Dec. 1, 2022 - Washington, DC) - ISRI, the Voice of the Recycling Industry™, successfully advocated on behalf of the recycled materials industry, and issues the following statement on Congressional action that averted a rail strike:

“ISRI is thrilled that Congress took this significant action to avert a railroad labor shutdown ahead of the deadline,” said ISRI President Robin Wiener. “Rail service is vital to receiving and delivering recycled materials used in manufacturing, including the 70 percent of all U.S. produced steel that is made from recycled material. Overall, nearly 40 percent of recycled materials, comprised of steel, aluminum, paper, plastics, copper, rubber, and glass, travel by rail to fortify U.S. supply chains and infrastructure. The railways are key to delivering recycled materials to manufacturers to produce everyday items and essential infrastructure.”

ISRI is the "Voice of the Recycling Industry™," representing more than 1,300 companies in the U.S. and 40 countries around the globe. Based in Washington, D.C., ISRI  provides advocacy, education, safety and compliance training, and promotes public awareness of the vital role recycled materials play in the U.S. economy, global trade, the environment and sustainable development.
