In June 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced more than $192 million in new funding for recycling batteries from consumer products (including electric vehicles), launching an advanced battery research and development consortium, and the continuation of the Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize. With concept papers due August 17, 2023 and full applications due November 29, 2023, please join us for this timely webinar as DOE Critical Materials Program Manager, Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains, Salim Bhabhrawala shares key information about what battery recycling funding options are available, how to apply, and program requirements. Moderated by ISRI Chief Economist and Director of Commodities, Joe Pickard.

Salim Bhabhrawala (he/his/him) is currently the Critical Materials Program Manager in the Office of Manufacturing and Supply Chains (MESC) at the Department of Energy (DOE). Prior to that, he was the Critical Materials Sector Lead at the Office of Materials Industry at the Department of Commerce. He is originally from the Detroit area and has a bachelor’s degree in international economics from Michigan State University, and a master’s degree in Global Finance from the University of Denver. In his current role, Mr. Bhabhrawala and his team is tasked with catalyzing the development of the domestic clean energy sector industrial base through targeted investments under the provisions of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. These investments via grants, awards, loans and tax provisions will establish and secure domestic supply chains and recycling policies for the critical minerals needed to make the transition to a clean-green economy. Mr. Bhabhrawala currently lives on Capitol Hill in Washington DC with his partner and two children. He also sits on several U.S. Government Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Councils and Advisory Committees.

Joe Pickard serves as the Chief Economist and Director of Commodities at ISRI. Since 2010, Pickard has directed ISRI’s research and analysis on recycled commodity markets and the key economic role recycling plays in the United States and globally. Previously, Pickard served as the economist for the International Copper Study Group in Lisbon, Portugal. As a member of ITAC No. 5, he serves as an advisor to the U.S. Trade Representative and U.S. Commerce Department on trade issues related to nonferrous metals and critical minerals. Pickard holds an M.A. in Economics from Virginia Tech and a B.A. from Loyola University Maryland.
