The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) held their Recycling Committee meeting on Thursday, December 6.
Research Analyst for Commodities Bernie Lee gave a presentation on recycling markets and the effect that large scale policy changes, particularly vis-à-vis China, have had on market volatility and how they threaten sustainable recycling systems to the area’s municipal recycling administrators, who represented 18 different communities in the metro DC area. The presentation included clarifications on National Sword and Blue Sky, commercial scrap and residential recycling sub-sectors, and improving the awareness of recycling administrators of the often overlooked market forces that recyclers face when trying to run environmentally responsible and economically sound recycling businesses.
According to John Snarr, the principal planner for MWCOG, the presentation “set a great tone for the meeting and provided valuable market insight that everyone found valuable.”
