Statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that each day in the U.S. approximately nine people are killed and more than 1,000 are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. In 2016, distracted driving claimed 3,450 lives.
On November 13, ISRI’s Rachel Pollack, Brady Mills, and Commodor Hall participated in a Distracted Driving Symposium that also featured organizations such as the National Waste and Recycling Association, AAA, Solid Waste Association of North America, CARI, NSC, International Association of Police Chiefs (IACP), and Towing Recovery Association (TRA). Company stakeholders just to name a few, such as E.L. Harvey & Sons, Waste Management, Waste Connections, Republic Services, and Waste Industries were also present.
The meeting consisted of a lot of brain storming and forming of ideas on how to combat distracted driving internally (industry perspective) and externally (public perspective). Although this mission will take time, ISRI fully supports this initiative. Additional meetings are expected in the near future, for more details contact ISRI Transportation Safety Director Commodor Hall
