Last week in Chicago, Congressman John Shimkus toured the ARCOA electronics recycling facility with several other Chicago area ISRI members. Congressman Shimkus was interested in learning more about the electronics recycling and repair industry segment as he chairs the U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee on the Environment and the Economy and serves as the co-chair of the House Recycling Caucus.
Congressman Shimkus was aware that the electronics recycling business models have largely shifted towards more repair and asset management aspects and this change impacts not just recyclers but original equipment manufacturers as well. His other interests were discussing other areas of recycling, the trade issues surrounding tariffs and China, the ocean plastics problem, and the impacts from the tax reforms on the recycling industry. Mr. Shimkus has been a strong supporter of the scrap recycling industry and he makes it a point to regularly tour recycling facilities to receive updates directly from recyclers themselves. These types of facility tours whether they be for a federal or state representative are extremely import towards educating elected officials about the industry and the challenges it faces.
