Lead-Acid Batteries Reach Near-Perfect Recycling Rate

With a recycling rate approaching 100 percent (99.3 percent, to be exact), lead-acid batteries are the most-recycled consumer product in the United States, according to a study released by Essential Energy Everyday and its parent organization, the Battery Council International (Chicago).

The average new lead battery contains more than 80 percent recycled lead battery material, which keeps an estimated 1.7 million tons of batteries a year out of landfills, BCI says. The study calculated recycling rates based on domestic lead battery recycling and lead from batteries available for recycling, considering new battery shipments, battery exports, imports of products containing a battery, and imports of scrap lead and used batteries.
