ISRI Senior Director for Government Relations and International Affairs Adina Renee Adler was the featured speaker at the conference, Nicaragua Sí Recicla hosted by the country’s relatively new Cámara de Reciclaje de Nicaragua – CARENIC.
Adina spoke on the economic and environmental benefits of recycling and the importance of recycling to the manufacturing supply chain. The conference was an opportunity to explore Nicaragua’s current recycling industry and its potential growth. In meetings with companies and environmental NGOs, there is a small but growing consciousness of separating recyclables from waste, but without processing in the country, nearly all materials are exported. CARENIC may organize a small delegation to attend ISRI2018 as it could lead to opportunities for more trade as well as greater professionalization of the organization, and members expressed interest in RIOS™ as a potential differentiator from the still-largely inform sector involved in recycling.
