$53 Billion Economic Impact from U.S. Metal Scrap Recyclers

As part of the 2017 Economic Impact Study conducted by John Dunham & Associates for ISRI earlier this year, economic impact data are now available by major scrap commodity group at both the national and state levels.

Those figures indicate that scrap metal recyclers in the United States generate a total economic impact of nearly $53 billion, while directly and indirectly supporting more than 247,000 jobs. In addition, the metal recycling industry accounts for $6.04 billion in federal, state, and local taxes, according to the Dunham report. For more information about the 2017 economic impact study and the range of available data on the scrap recycling industry at the national, state, Congressional, statehouse, and city levels, please contact ISRI Chief Economist and Director of Commodities Joe Pickard.
