In 2010, ISRI and the National Recycling Coalition joined forces to hold the first “Recycling Works” gala dinner in Washington, D.C.
There, the two groups honored Sen. Thomas Carper (D-Del.) with the “Recycling Works” award for his leadership on recycling. ISRI Chair John Sacco and NRC President Melinda Uerling jointly bestowed the award, thanking Carper for his steadfast support. ISRI and NRC held the second “Recycling Works” gala dinner in 2011, recognizing Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.) for his support of recycling. The following year—2012--the U.S. Senate returned the recognition, unanimously approving Senate Resolution 251, which expressed support for recycling and recognized the recycling industry’s tremendous contributions to the U.S. economy and environment. “The resolution is a significant recognition of recycling, the U.S. scrap industry, and the work each of you does every day,” ISRI President Robin Wiener said at the time.
