Following many informal discussions with rail shippers and associations including ISRI, the Surface Transportation Board (STB) issued a very strong letter to the president of CSX Transportation regarding the significant rail disruptions across their service area.
This was a very proactive response by the STB with all three acting commissioners signing the letter. (Their nominations are still pending along with additional nominations). CSX's service has deteriorated for many rail customers as well as caused disruptions to other rail lines due to switching delays. CSX has also instituted certain additional storage charges. While this letter was largely initiated by customer complaints directly to the STB through the Office of Public Assistance (which has been very helpful to several ISRI members), ISRI will be following up on the STB letter individually. ISRI has also been a member of the rail coalition (formally known as CURE) for over a decade and provided anecdotal examples and complaints over the past couple of weeks to get the STB to take action even in an 'acting' capacity which is quite rare given the STB is without a quorum. If you have examples of rail problems whether or not it is a result of this CSX issue, please do not hesitate to contact Billy Johnson.
