As per U.S. trade law, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative sent to Congress this week its negotiating objectives for the renegotiation of NAFTA.
In particular for recyclers, all tariffs will remain zero and not renegotiated. On the non-tariff side, the document included generalized positions on improving customs procedures and maintaining strict rules of origin. Although specific proposals ISRI has been working on with the Administration are not mentioned, this document is intended as a guide but not a prescription – we have been reassured by the negotiators that they will work with us on specific ways to improve customs procedures and to recognize ISRI Specifications as the standard for scrap commodities.
