ISRI Time Capsule: The Emergence of E-Recycling

Along with the boom in personal computing throughout the 1990s came the need to start recycling the growing stream of end-of-life electronic devices.

May10TimeCapsuleElectronicsSwedish recycler Gotthard Nilsson and waste management company Ragn-Sells founded a joint venture operation in 1994 to recycle scrap electronic materials, primarily 1980s-era computers collected in Sweden. Their U. S. scrap colleagues weren’t far behind, with the momentum building enough by 1997 to merit holding the first Electronic Product Recovery and Recycling Conference (EPR2) to help build the fledgling e-recycling sector.
