ISRI Time Capsule: The Environmental Decade

The 1990s quickly shaped up to be the “environmental decade” for the scrap recycling industry due to significant legislative and regulatory challenges such as Superfund and the U.S. EPA’s Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, which threatened to classify wire-chopping tailings and shredder fluff as hazardous wastes.

TimeCapsuleEnvironmentalIn response, ISRI expanded its environmental-related assistance and guidance to members, developing its first-ever Environmental Operating Guidelines in 1992. It followed up that effort with a series of environmental compliance seminars to complement the printed manual, and it contracted with Winston & Strawn, a Chicago-based national environmental law firm, to provide on-site environmental compliance services to member companies at “significantly discounted rates.”
