2017 marks ISRI’s 30th Anniversary. To help commemorate this special milestone this year, issues of the Leadership Update will include a special ISRI Time Capsule feature.
The Time Capsule will be used to highlight important moments in ISRI’s history. We hope you enjoy our lookback at the news and achievements of ISRI’s first 30 years.
On June 9, 1987, members of the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel (Washington,
D.C.) and the National Association of Recycling Industries (New York) voted to merge to form one trade association for the scrap recycling industry. The new group’s board of directors decided to name the unified association the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. at its first meeting in July 1987. The merger yielded many benefits, “the greatest of which is an 1,800-member organization able to speak with one voice for the entire recycling industry,” said Richard Abrams, ISRI’s first elected president.
