ISRI and the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) recently participated at the fifth meeting of the expert working group (EWG5) on environmentally sound management (ESM) held in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The ESM Framework establishes a common understanding of what ESM encompasses and identifies tools and strategies to promote the implementation of ESM. The meeting focused on finalizing a set of practical manuals and fact sheets on varying recyclable streams, including used and end-of-life electronics, end-of-life vehicles, used tires, and used and spent lead-acid batteries. The group has developed a check-list for self-assessment of national ESM capacity in order to evaluate information received from parties and national initiatives to promote ESM in the informal sector. The group plans to have its sixth meeting, potentially in Mechelen, Belgium in January 2017, prior to the thirteenth
meeting of the Conference of the Parties, to be held in Geneva in May 2017. ISRI participates as an industry expert observer and, along with BIR, will submit comments to the ongoing rafts.
