National Motor Vehicle Titling Information System (NMVTIS)

What is NMVTIS?

The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, or NMVTIS, is an electronic database that enables users to access automobile titling information, including brand history and certain historical theft data.  NMVTIS is operated on behalf of DOJ by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). Following an expedited period for public comments prompted by a federal lawsuit filed by the Consumers Union in February 2008, the DOJ issued the rules with little deviation from the original 1992 Anti-Car Theft Act.
