Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS)

Quality. Environment. Health & Safety. These three areas—represented by the acronym "QEH&S"—are critically important to every scrap recycler.

Operations that don't excel in QEH&S are more likely to experience inefficiencies, problems, violations, and accidents, potentially hurting the bottom line. In contrast, companies that strive for excellence in QEH&S help to ensure profitability and future viability. But how can scrap recyclers achieve QEH&S success?

That's where ISRI's Recycling Industry Operating Standard—or RIOS—comes in.

Train-the-Trainer Workshops

RIOS Train-the-Trainer workshops explore the fundamentals of RIOS for achieving continual improvement in quality, environmental, and health & safety (QEH&S) performance and how to use the RIOS Implementation Guide to design and implement RIOS and R2/RIOS management systems.

Attendees must be employed by a RIOS member facility or an implementation consultant under contract to a RIOS member facility. Not a RIOS member? Not a problem. You can sign up for RIOS membership and the Workshops at the same time.

The next workshop will be held June 16–17, 2010 at the Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport in Rosemont (Chicago), Illinois. Registration is $495 per attendee. The Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport is offering a "Recycling Industry Operating Standard Training" rate of $149 per night plus tax.

Introduction to RIOS
This Q&A introduces RIOS and explains what it can do for your recycling operations.

Case Study

"We finally received the results of our January OSHA inspection...an Industrial Hygiene inspection based on a new Southeast region initiative and included air and water sampling. In addition to the sampling, the inspector conducted a full site inspection including an audit of our safety program, which, of course, is part of our RIOS system. The results, see below, are another testament to the level of professionalism that our team represents and, at least as importantly, to the value of the RIOS System."

Subject: OSHA INSPECTION RESULTS

Team Ocala,

It is with great pride that I can officially report the findings of the extensive OSHA audit of our facility on January 12, 2010 by the Jacksonville OSHA Industrial Hygienist:

One Citation with zero dollars in penalties!

This is nothing short of extraordinary and I am immensely proud of your collective commitment to safety. Once again you have demonstrated the highest level of professionalism and I am honored to be part of YOUR team.

GUNG HO!

—Michael Bianculli, Ocala Recycling
