ISRI Commodity Series: Outlook on Ferrous

Given the rapidly changing policy landscape in Washington and renewed emphasis on U.S. manufacturing, the steel sector is firmly back in the spotlight. Plans for increased infrastructure spending, restructuring the tax code, and renegotiating trade deals are just a few of the issues that are expected to have outsized implications for the U.S. steel and ferrous scrap industries. Please join ISRI Chief Economist and Director of Commodities Joe Pickard and Steel-Insights President Becky Hites for a discussion of the key domestic and global market and policy developments that are going to impact ferrous scrap recyclers this year.

Understanding U.S. Trade Policy in the Wake of A New Presidency

The Trump Administration has been a whirlwind of activity since Inauguration Day signing executive orders and making pronouncements on a host of issues fulfilling campaign promises within the first 100 days of his presidency including the future of U.S. trade agreements (such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), NAFTA and talks with individual countries for the development of bilateral agreements), pursuing energy and infrastructure projects and imposing tariffs, taxes and other fees. How will these moves impact the scrap industry? For example, Trump supports the completion of the Keystone XL Pipeline, especially with pipes made with American-made steel. Will the renegotiation of NAFTA impair the movement of scrap between the United States and Mexico? In this insightful webinar, you will hear from ISRI’s Governmental Relations team who are closely tracking President Trump’s policies and engaging with key government officials on behalf of ISRI members. They will offer valuable insights on how these issues are playing on Capitol Hill, with the various executive agencies, and around the world. Listen to Mark Reiter, VP for Government Affairs, Billy Johnson, Chief Lobbyist and Adina Renee Adler, Sr. Director for International Relations, on what they are hearing and how they think these issues will take shape in the next four years.

Adding Plastic Film to Your Commodity Stream

Plastic film is a valuable resources that has gotten a bad “wrap”. The material is being recycled and marketed very successfully by many recyclers across the globe. The recovery rate for post-consumer plastic film has only gone up and according to a January 2016 report published by the American Chemistry Council, reached 1.17 billion pounds. Of this amount, 45 percent was recycled domestically with the remainder being exported. With so much film being recovered, adding this material to your commodity stream may be a good fit. But where do you start? How do you determine what markets you should enter and what types of film should you recover? This session is a beginner’s guide to recycling plastic film and will help you understand the markets, the material and how best to handle it. If you’re looking for a material to add to your commodity stream, this webinar will help you determine if plastic film is it.
