Recycling Industry Operating Standard—RIOS

Important Information for Certifying Bodies and Auditors (Updated 12/19/2008)

ANAB's RIOS Accreditation Program begins late December 2008. Program applications and instructions and the RIOS Accreditation Rule can be found at www.anab.org.

The RIOS Accreditation Rule identifies the requirements and required documents for certifying bodies seeking ANAB Accreditation to RIOS. The required documents include "RIOS Certifying Body Accreditation" (formerly "RIOS Certifying Body Qualifications") and "RIOS Certification Procedure." These two ISC documents (latest versions dated 10/16/2008) are freely available at the links below.

As specified in "RIOS Certifying Body Accreditiation," RIOS Auditors must complete an ISC-approved RIOS Auditor training course. The next ISC-approved RIOS Auditor training course will be offered February 23–25, 2009 near Newark, N.J., at a location to be determined. Please mark your calendars. This course will review the scrap recycling industry and cover the Recycling Industry Operating Standard and (new!) Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices for Use in Accredited Certification Programs For Electronics Recyclers, to be implemented and verified via RIOS. The cost of the entire course is $1,500 per attendee. (Auditors who completed the March 2008 course need only take the R2 portion of this course; contact me for details.) Course prerequisites are ownership of a valid licensed copy of the Recycling Industry Operating Standard and possession of a copy of the R2 document (freely available at http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/conserve/materials/ecycling/r2practices.htm); attendees will use their own copies during the course. More details will be posted here. Please contact David Wagger at davidwagger@isri.org if you have any questions.

Important Information for Current and Prospective RIOS Members (Updated 12/19/2008)

The next RIOS Train-the-Trainer Training course for RIOS member staff will be offered March 23–25, 2009 at a location to be determined. Please mark your calendars. The course will delve into the details of the Recycling Industry Operating Standard and an updated RIOS Implementation Guide, which will include new material about RIOS and the Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices for Use in Accredited Certification Programs For Electronics Recyclers (freely available at http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/conserve/materials/ecycling/r2practices.htm). More details will be posted here.

Also, the ISC-approved RIOS Auditor Training course (see box for Certifying Bodies and Auditors) is open to and appropriate for RIOS member staff who perform internal audits of their RIOS management systems. Staff will gain knowledge and insight about RIOS certification audits and how external auditors conduct them.

Please contact David Wagger at davidwagger@isri.org if you have any questions.

Quality. Environment. Health & Safety.

Quality, Environment, and Health & Safety (QEH&S) are critically important to every scrap recycler: Operations that don't excel in QEH&S are more likely to experience inefficiencies, problems, violations, and accidents, all of which can hurting the bottom line.

Companies that strive for excellence in QEH&S help ensure  profitability and viability. But how can scrap recyclers achieve QEH&S success? That's where ISRI's new Recycling Industry Operating Standard—or RIOS—comes in.
