The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc.
(ISRI) is the private, non-profit trade association
that is the "Voice of the Recycling Industry," Based
in Washington, D.C., ISRI represents more than 1,600
private, for-profit companies that process, broker,
and industrially consume scrap commodities,
including ferrous and nonferrous metals, paper,
electronics, rubber, plastics, glass, and
textiles.
ISRI members employ more than 50,000 individuals
and operate at more than 3,000 facilities worldwide,
more than 80 percent of which are located in the
United States. ISRI assists member companies by
providing a variety of products and services
designed to help them run better, cleaner, safer,
and more profitable operations. From assistance with
insurance issues and SREA compliance to the
Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS) and the
industry's most comprehensive collection of safety
training materials, ISRI is and will continue to be
the "Voice of the Recycling Industry."
Many ISRI member companies are family-owned
businesses, and a significant number of them have
been in continuous operation for 100 years or more.
ISRI members range in size from small, one-yard
operations to large, publicly held corporations with
multiple facilities nationwide and even worldwide.
Other ISRI members focus on the business of
brokering and trading recyclable materials,
consolidating materials from a variety of businesses
to expedite the fulfill ment of consumer needs.
ISRI's associate members include equipment and
service providers that market to the scrap recycling
industry. Manufacturers and sellers of equipment and
services—like shredders, balers, cranes, cargo
transporters, computer systems, and more—find
value in promoting the scrap recycling industry
through their membership in ISRI. Companies that are
consumers of scrap are also welcomed as members of
the association as their input is extremely valuable
to the operations of this industry.
Among its services, ISRI provides education,
training, advocacy, and compliance guidance and
promotes public awareness of the value and
importance of recycling to the production of the
world's goods and services.
ISRI's national office and its 21 chapters:
- Represent the interests of scrap recyclers to
the executive branch, Capitol Hill, and state
legislatures and regulatory agencies.
- Provide continuing education and training to
members through forums, seminars, workshops,
commodity roundtables, publications, an annual
convention, and the world's largest annual scrap
recycling exposition.
- Educate the public about the benefits of scrap
recycling.
- Inform members and the public about scrap
recycling through the ISRI Web site, www.isri.org.
