Home  Theft Alert  Catalytic Converters Targeted Nationwide

Aug. 1, 2007

Catalytic Converters Targeted Nationwide

The Chino Police Department of Chino, Calif., has issued a "Crime Analysis Bulletin" addressing a recent rash of catalytic converter thefts in the area. But it is a problem of concern to the industry nationwide.

The bulletin states that vehicles with the Toyota make are particular targets because the converters in those vehicles are easier to get at than most. They are attached with four bolts easily sawed off, as opposed to most vehicles, which usually weld the converter to the exhaust system.

ISRI encourages members to be extra careful when presented with catalytic converters, especially in bulk. A stolen catalytic converter can mean repair costs of up to $2,000 for an individual car owner depending on the make and model of the automobile.

While it's always important to be on the lookout for suspicious material, please be aware of this latest unfortunate trend and be even more diligent when it comes to catalytic converters.

Visit www.isri.org/theft/practices/ to view ISRI's Recommended Practices and Procedures for Minimizing the Risks of Purchasing Stolen Scrap Materials.

You can see the full Bulletin here (PDF).
